Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still. Discover the riveting first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Infernal Devices Trilogy, prequel to the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

Includes the never-before-seen short story Magnus's Vow!

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

My Review:
I really enjoyed this novel. I think it was a fun story to bring me into the series. The story itself I really loved. I thought it was exciting and interesting. I was immediately drawn into the story. I loved the way it was written and all the references to poetry and classic stories (I know really want to read more classics). There were things I didn't like about the book. I had some issues with the character development. While there was some I felt it was a bit lacking. I loved the main character Tessa, I feel like I could really connect with her but I really just didn't connect with any other character. I am hoping that later in the series there will be character development among the other characters.

  1. I still have yet to read this book and it has been sitting on my TBR shelf for as long as I can remember and I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read a Cassandra Clare book before.. but I REALLY want to!
I was surprised you didn't give this 5 stars, everyone swears by her books! Anyways, not everyone can connect to the characters; so I understand :)

    Great review!

  2. Even though you didn't connect entirely with every character, I'm still glad you gave it four stars. That means there's something worth reading into this series (which apparently I have to) :P I hope you like the other two books in this mini series. And hopefully you'll connect to more of the characters too ^_^
