For sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford, the New Hampshire College Prep program is the chance of a lifetime. Except that when Dan arrives, he finds that the usual summer housing has been closed, forcing students to stay in the crumbling Brookline Dorm—formerly a psychiatric hospital. As Dan and his new friends Abby and Jordan start exploring Brookline's twisty halls and hidden basement, they uncover disturbing secrets about what really went on here . . . secrets that link Dan and his friends to the asylum's dark past. Because Brookline was no ordinary mental hospital, and there are some secrets that refuse to stay buried

My Review:
I had high hopes going into this novel. The synopsis on the back and cover gave the impression of a creepy story. However I feel as though the "horror" factor just fell short. The story is about three teenagers who go to a college prep program and are housed in an old asylum. The uncover weird events that took place when the asylum was happening and these events start to intertwine with the teens lives.

I would have loved to read more about the asylum and the practices that took place while the asylum was open. I feel like this was cut too short. The was so much detail surrounding the teens that I think the asylum story was just sort of lost in the mix.

With this being a series, I hope this was just an opening that gave a lot of back story and the second novel lives up to the creepy horror feel the novels give off.

  1. I felt exactly like you did. I still haven't read Sanctum either, but I hope it gets better story-wise in the creepy concept. This first installment felt like a MG novel too.
